With Brits battling against , higher taxes and supermarket costs, finding the cheapest products has become a full time sport for many. However, a new study has revealed the breakdown of the cost of a basket of food in each supermarket, with one company coming out on top by 56p.

has been named as the UK's cheapest supermarket following a new independent price comparison survey by trade magazine . This is the fourth time in a row that the money-saving supermarket has come out on top. The study, which identifies and tallies up a basket of 33 everyday items, has found Aldi to be the kindest on the purse strings for a weekly shop.

A basket of items at Aldi, which includes common items such as honey, apples, yoghurt and broccoli, comes in at £59.44, which is 56p cheaper than its deal-loving competitor Lidl.

Asda came in third place with a basket total of £66.14, with Tesco in fourth place, just 53p behind.

Among the traditional full-priced supermarkets, Morrisons was one of most expensive, with a basket that cost £10.73 - or 18% - more than Aldi at £70.17. Sainsbury's was just slightly cheaper, with a basket total of £70.09.

In addition, the same products cost £20.41 more at the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose, which totalled £79.85.

Aldi, the fourth-largest supermarket in the UK, was also named the UK's cheapest supermarket for each of the past four years, and for every month so far this year, by consumer champion Which?.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi, said: "While others make noise about price, Aldi delivers on it week in, week out. Being named the UK's cheapest supermarket by both the G33 and Which? in the same week isn't just a win, it's proof that no one can match the consistent value we offer.

"These back-to-back endorsements reinforce what our customers already know: when it comes to price, Aldi leads. We've always promised to put value first, and we're proud to be delivering on that, every single day."
