Pop sensation Miley Cyrus has opened up about the restrictions she faced following her departure from Disney , revealing that she was not allowed to perform songs from her iconic show Hannah Montana—even though her face and voice were tied to the music.
Speaking on The Ringer podcast, the 32-year-old singer reflected on her post-Disney years and the emotional toll of being denied access to the music that launched her career.
“After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,” she said.
“It’s not like I wanted to—performing The Best of Both Worlds between We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball wouldn’t have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”
Cyrus shot to fame between 2006 and 2011 as the lead in Hannah Montana, portraying a teenager living a double life as an ordinary girl and a famous pop star. The Disney Channel series became a cultural phenomenon, turning Cyrus into a household name and a teen idol.
While the Flowers hitmaker moved on to forge a successful music career of her own, the limitations imposed on her use of Hannah Montana material remained a sore point.
However, that changed last year when Disney formally recognised her contributions to the company's legacy. In 2024, she was honoured as a Disney Legend during the D23 Expo, a title reserved for individuals who have made a lasting impact on the brand.
“It was pretty cool,” Cyrus added, reflecting on finally being able to revisit her early work after the honour.
The singer is currently gearing up for the release of her newest project, Something Beautiful—a 55-minute visual album set to premiere in theatres worldwide on June 27, following a U.S. theatrical debut on June 12. The visual experience will feature 13 tracks and marks her most ambitious creative venture to date.
