Eight passengers fell off a overcrowded local train near Mumbra railway station in Maharashtra, officials said on Monday, June 9. "There has been an incident where eight people travelling on local trains from Mumbra to Diva fell down," an official said.

"Total 13 people have been injured. So far we have not got any information regarding any deaths," said

a, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Central Railway.

Meanwhile, the Central Railways said, "The reason for the accident is believed to be excessive crowd on the train."

The Central Railways informed that some passengers travelling towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai fell from the train at Thane's Mumbra railway station.

"The railway administration and police have reached the spot," it added.

Those injured were taken immediately to the nearest hospital. The Central Railways said investigation into the accident has begun.

"Local services have also been affected by the incident," it added.

What led to Mumbra train tragedy?

Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Central Railway, said the mishap occurred after people travelling on the footboard of the two trains collided.

Nila said it was "primarily informed" there were two trains - one travelling towards Kasara and another travelling towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai.

He said the people who were travelling on the footboard collided with each other which resulted into the falling down of wight passengers.

"People travelling on the footboard on a local train towards Kasara, and similarly those on a train going towards CSMT, collided with each other and fell," he said.

The official also clarified that it was not a collision. "In this incident, the passengers travelling on footboards in trains in opposite directions got entangled," he added.

"The distance between two trains is 1.5-2 meters, but on curves, a slight tilt happens, and this could be an additional reason for the incident," he said.

Swapnil Nila said the guard of a Kasara-bound train reported about the injured passengers along the track side to the control room at around 9.30 am.

Several feared dead

At least three passengers were feared dead and several others suffered injuries when they fell off a crowded moving train in Maharashtrat on Monday morning, a police official told news agency PTI.
