So, is being an ‘ absent parent ’ always a bad thing?
Not necessarily.

There are phases in life when emotional bandwidth shrinks, maybe due to stress, health, or external pressures. A parent might not always be at their best, and that’s human. Being temporarily emotionally distant doesn’t define parenting as absent or bad.
But if the emotional gap becomes a pattern, it begins to shape a child’s inner world. They might feel they must handle things alone or seek validation elsewhere. That’s where the damage quietly builds.
Parenting isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence. And not just being in the room, but in the moment. The warmth in the eyes. The softness in the voice. The laughter shared at the dinner table for no reason at all.
