Among the most -hungry appliances in the home, the washing machine is often overlooked when it comes to cost-cutting tips. Yet, when you choose to run it could be just as important as how often you use it or what temperature you wash at.

An expert says that adjusting the time of day you do can significantly reduce your - especially if you're on a variable or time-of-use tariff. What might seem like a small shift in routine could actually lead to savings that add up over the year.

Households with an Economy 7 meter - or a similar off-peak electricity tariff - could save money simply by using appliances during quieter times on the electricity grid.

Octopus Energy confirms that Economy 7 customers usually benefit from cheaper electricity between 12am to 7am.

Running your washing machine during these hours means you're drawing power when the demand for electricty in the UK is lower, which is why it's cheaper.

Gordon Wallis, energy expert at Your NRG, explained: "Many people are unaware that the time of day they use their washing machine can have a significant impact on their energy bills.

"For those on time-of-use tariffs, electricity providers often charge less during off-peak hours, such as late at night or early morning."

Wallis said: "Running your washing machine in the evening or overnight, when demand is lower, is not only more cost-effective but also supports a more balanced use of the electricity grid."

Other simple tips include only running full loads of laundry and opting for cold washes, where possible.

The environmental benefits of this mindful approach to laundry shouldn't be underestimated, either.

"Energy efficiency isn't just about reducing bills - it's also about protecting the environment," Wallis added.

By using less power and spreading demand more evenly, households can help ease pressure on the national grid and cut overall emissions.

"These actions, when adopted by many, can have a really positive environmental impact," Wallis said. So while switching to off-peak washing may seem like a minor change, it's one that can help both your wallet and the environment.
