Today, Dharmendra is regarded as one of the most legendary figures in Indian cinema, but his journey to stardom began with extreme simplicity—and almost no money. In fact, for his very first film, he didn’t even earn ₹100.
The Beginning of a StarDharmendra entered Bollywood more than 65 years ago. His first film, ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’, was released in 1960 and directed by Arjun Hingorani, who later became a close collaborator. Dharmendra had arrived in Mumbai from Punjab, with big dreams and little money.
Paid Just ₹51 as Signing AmountRecounting the story on shows like Dance Deewane and in interviews, Dharmendra revealed that he was expecting a big signing amount—possibly ₹5,000. But instead, the three men present (including the director) pulled out ₹17 each from their pockets and gave him ₹51 total. That was his first-ever film fee.
Despite the modest amount, Dharmendra considers those ₹51 lucky. After all, it marked the beginning of a career that would span decades and define an era of Indian cinema.
How Did He Spend the ₹51?Back in 1960, ₹51 was not insignificant. Dharmendra, then struggling and with very few means in Mumbai, used that money to treat himself to a proper meal at a hotel. Later that evening, he celebrated with his friends. That moment of joy, funded by his first paycheck, became a memory he has cherished ever since.
From ₹51 to CroresToday, veteran actors often charge crores per film. But Dharmendra’s journey from earning ₹51 to becoming Bollywood’s He-Man and a household name is a powerful reminder of how humble beginnings can lead to legendary careers.
