After Vivek Agnihotri and Laxman Utekar, Ektaa Kapoor has called out Anurag Kashyap for his outrageous comment on “Saas Bahu and Netflix”.

The controversy stems from a recent appearance by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast, where he reflected on the platform’s initial foray into India with Sacred Games — the dark, critically acclaimed crime series helmed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. Sarandos referred to the decision as perhaps a ‘mistake’, implying that launching with a ‘more populist’ show might have been a more strategic choice during Netflix’s early days in the Indian market.

What he meant to say was that a massy show could have caught more eyeballs, amplifying the OTT’s reach in its initial days.

Interestingly, Sacred Games is still one of the most iconic shows and holds a special place in Indian pop culture.

Anurag Kashyap, who was one of the creators of Sacred Games, replied to Sarandos’ comment on his Instagram story.

He wrote, “He should have started with Saas Bahu… he would have done well. Which he is doing now”.

Anurag also called Sarandos “the definition of dumb” and said he doesn’t understand the art of storytelling.

Ektaa Kapoor, a producer known for iconic Indian serials like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, called out Anurag Kashyap’s comment and posted on Instagram, “Ur so dumb... saying this put u on an advantage 'I'm smarter cooler' but naaaaaaaa! Darling how about gracious!!! N self aware?????? An art a lot of artists don't have! ‘Saas bahu’ n their impact on Indian masses (how women got a voice in mass India) is well documented by a prestigious Chicago research! But artists who talk of an inclusive world are actually more classist.”

Interestingly, Netflix recently announced that they are going to collaborate with Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms for a project.
