Rohit Sharma's aspiration to play the World Cup 2027 may turn out to be a distant dream with the BCCI scheming to switch things up in ODIs. Rohit Sharma stepped down from T20Is following the T20 World Cup last year and repeated the same action ahead of the India vs England series. The Hit-Man has his sights on the target in South Africa but may not be given the chance.

According to a Hindustan Times news report, BCCI was anticipating that Rohit Sharma would retire from all cricket when he walked away from Test cricket. Nevertheless, the 38-year-old shocked everyone with his plan to carry on in ODIs, keeping an eye on the World Cup 2027. Rohit valiantly led the Men in Blue to the final in 2023 falling just short at the last hurdle. He then guided India to victories in the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy 2025.

But BCCI may not be too eager to allow Rohit to carry on. The HT report says that there are no talks in the pipeline, but chief selector Ajit Agarkar would be tasked with arranging a leadership handover.

Here is what a BCCI source told The Hindustan Times

“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future,”

India will have 27 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup. India has sufficient time to select and groom a replacement for the tournament in South Africa. MS Dhoni had selected Virat Kohli as his replacement prior to the 2017 Champions Trophy. Kohli had been leading the team in the 2019 WC with Dhoni as a player.

Rohit might continue playing, but the captaincy could be handed to Shreyas Iyer. A similar change happened at Mumbai Indians when Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain. The same could now happen in Team India with Iyer. The Mumbai batter is the only player to lead three IPL teams to the final and also guided Mumbai to a win.

“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,”
