How many marks are required to pass UPSC prelims?
UPSC Prelims exam is conducted in two papers:

Paper I – General Studies (GS Paper I)

Paper II – Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

Paper I (GS Paper I) – Important for merit determination

The first paper of the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam (Prelims) 2025 i.e. General Studies Paper I consists of a total of 100 questions, for which a maximum of 200 marks are prescribed. 2 marks are given for every correct answer, while there is a negative marking of 0.66 marks for the wrong answer. There is no fixed limit of passing marks, as it depends on the cutoff score of each year. If we look at the trend of previous years, the cutoff score for the General category has been around 88 to 95 marks.

Paper II (CSAT) – Qualifying only
The second paper of the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam (Prelims) 2025 i.e. CSAT consists of a total of 80 questions, for which a maximum of 200 marks are set. 2.5 marks are given for every correct answer, while there is a negative marking of 0.83 marks for every wrong answer. To pass this paper, it is mandatory to get at least 33% marks i.e. 66 marks. It is worth noting that CSAT is only a qualifying paper, so its marks are not added to the merit list or cutoff score. But if the candidates do not pass this paper, they are not allowed to appear in the Mains exam.

How is the UPSC Prelims cutoff decided?
UPSC takes into account several factors to decide the prelims cutoff every year:

Number of candidates

Number of vacancies (979 vacancies in 2025)

Difficulty level of the exam
Although the total marks in prelims are 400 (GS + CSAT), eligibility for the mains exam is based only on the score of GS Paper I. Therefore, candidates must score high in the General Studies paper and at least pass the CSAT.
