Scott Mills has sparked backlash after he admitted sharing his salary due to working at the is "odd". The star has said he finally feels 'financially secure' and as if he's 'made it' after landing a huge role on . The 51 year old disc jockey succeeded Zoe Ball in January when she stepped down to spend more time with her family. In a candid interview with The Telegraph, Scott confessed that for the first time he's truly embracing self-belief: "For the first time, I really do believe in myself. You have to look at the facts. They've put you on the breakfast show, you must be doing something right."
He also said: "The thing is, you just have to accept that that is part of working at the BBC. The first time you realise you're on that list and then there it is in the newspaper in black and white, it's an odd feeling to be sure. It felt quite exposing, because I'm not someone who talks about money." After his comments were sharing in a discussion on Channel 5's Jeremy Vine, viewers took to social media to share their frustration at Scott's comments.
A post asked: "Should businesses make all employee salaries public? BBC Radio DJ Scott Mills has said it's odd for everyone to know your salary - he was talking about the fact the corporation publishes a list of its top earners each year."
One viewer replied: "Not everyone's salaries!! But for the likes of BBC Scott Mills, and Vine etc, yes! Cos WE are paying it!!!!" Another agreed: "We have salary bandings, so people do know. BBC as a corporation funded by the public, should know what presenters are getting."
A third raged: "In companies, schools etc, the jobs are graded, and the payscales for the grades are easily accessible. Scott needs less of the rarified BBC air and admit his job's huge salary (which makes him bankable for additional high pay work for the other 22hrs a day) is shameful to him."
Talking to The Mirror last month, Scott revealed Zoe Ball cautioned him about the inherent challenges of the breakfast slot, but despite that, he calls it his 'happy place'.
He reflected: "The show is a lot, it's hard work. It's a treadmill every day. I remember when Zoe finished, she said to me: 'Look, doing breakfast on Radio 2 is quite a lot. It's quite demanding, and you've just always got to be on.", reports the Mirror.
He remarked: "She was right. The amount of guests we have - it's continuous. When she said it to me, I was like: 'I'm ready'. And I am, it's my happy place."
The Mail had previously disclosed that Scott received a modest pay increase for hosting the show, though it paled in comparison to his predecessor, Zoe. Reports suggest Scott's annual salary is around £450,000, whereas Zoe was believed to be earning £950,000.
