A Welsh football fan was injured in an incident during their World Cup qualifying match against Belgium. Reports surfaced late in the second half of the game at the Stade Roi Baudouin in Brussels that a fan had plummeted from the top tier of the stadium to the tier below. A group of fans reported that an ambulance at the stadium was attending to the injured supporter, who was subsequently taken to hospital.
They noted that some fans were "clearly emotional" and shedding tears as worry mounted for the injured individual. More than 4,000 Welsh fans were present in the stadium when the supporter fell from an upper tier into another group of fans located in the section below. Ian Hamer, a spectator at the game, relayed to BBC Radio Wales that just after Wales netted their third goal "there was a loud thud just to our right and huge commotion in the lower tier." He added: "Police, stewards, paramedics rushed into that area and three, four rows were cordoned off."
"For the next 15 minutes or so, the paramedics were treating the man and eventually they took him out on a stretcher and brought an ambulance to the back of the concourse, blue lights flashing from where he was taken to hospital after the game. Everyone's relieved to know that the man who fell is OK."
The dramatic 4-3 loss of Craig Bellamy's team, after a stunning comeback from 3-0 down within the first 27 minutes, was overshadowed by an incident missed by TV cameras at the match.
The Football Association of Wales released a statement confirming the incident: "We can confirm that one male fan fell from the upper to lower tier during the match at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels this evening. He was conscious and speaking and has now been taken to hospital for further checks."
