Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Leading American chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is engaged in preliminary discussions with the Indian government about a potential venture into indigenous Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) manufacturing. This move aligns perfectly with India’s ambitious “Make in India” policy and its mission to become a global semiconductor hub.

Jaya Jagadish, AMD India’s Managing Director, confirmed that while talks are in the very early stages, the company is exploring opportunities to support India’s growing electronics ecosystem. The focus on GPUs is particularly significant, as these powerful processors are the critical hardware backbone for the booming fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). A local GPU production facility would be a landmark achievement for the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Separately, AMD reaffirmed that its previously announced investment of $400 million over five years is firmly on track. This substantial investment is dedicated to expanding the company’s research and design capabilities within India. A key part of this plan is the construction of AMD’s largest global design center in Bengaluru, a state-of-the-art campus that will drive innovation in chip design and development.

While the $400 million investment is focused on R&D rather than manufacturing, the new discussions about local GPU production signal a deepening of AMD’s strategic interest in India. This two-pronged approach—strengthening design capabilities while exploring manufacturing—positions AMD as a key partner in India’s journey to build a comprehensive, end-to-end semiconductor supply chain.
