Artificial Intelligence (AI) is finding increasing application in physiotherapy, with experts viewing it as a tool that can assist in assessments, monitoring, and patient engagement. While human-led clinical judgment remains central to treatment, AI-based technologies are being used to supplement care, particularly in routine tasks and progress tracking.
"Physiotherapy, which focuses on restoring movement and function through physical methods, has traditionally relied on in-person evaluations. However, recent advances in motion tracking, data analytics, and remote monitoring have enabled the use of AI in certain supportive roles," said Dr. V.V. Manjula Kumari, a specialist in physiotherapy and functional medicine.
Experts caution that while AI can enhance efficiency and provide valuable data, it should be used under professional supervision. The core elements of patient care—manual therapy, tailored exercise, and clinical assessment—still require the expertise of trained physiotherapists.
In recent years, AI-powered platforms have emerged that can analyze posture, track range of motion, and even recommend exercise modifications based on patient performance. Wearable sensors combined with computer vision technology are now capable of capturing real-time movement data, allowing therapists to monitor patients remotely and intervene when necessary.
This is particularly beneficial in post-operative care, sports rehabilitation, and chronic condition management, where consistency and adherence to therapy protocols are crucial. AI can also assist in the early detection of deviations from recovery plans, helping clinicians adapt strategies more quickly.
Additionally, virtual physiotherapy tools powered by AI are improving patient engagement. Gamified rehabilitation programs and interactive interfaces have been shown to increase motivation among patients, particularly the elderly and pediatric populations.
However, experts reiterate that AI is not a replacement for human therapists. “It should be viewed as a digital partner that augments our capabilities,” added Dr. Kumari. “The empathy, touch, and personalization offered by a physiotherapist remain irreplaceable.”
