The faster the methods of online fraud are changing, the more important it has become for us to be vigilant. Now fraudsters have started using new technology, that too through APK files. Recently, a similar case came to light with a government employee, in which about Rs 4 lakh flew away from his bank account.

What is an APK file?

APK i.e. Android Package Kit, is a format through which apps are manually installed in Android phones. Just like we install the setup file of software in a computer, APK file is the setup file of a mobile app.

Although usually people download apps from Google Play Store only, when some people download APK files from a website or link, it can become a big threat.

Method of cheating, this is how they cheated.

Someone called a 59-year-old man in Telangana and introduced himself as a bank official. During the conversation, the fraudster said that the address registered in his bank account was wrong, which needs to be updated by filling a form.

After this, he sent an APK file to the victim and asked him to install it. As soon as the file was installed in the phone, the fraudster got access to the mobile and within a short time thousands of rupees were withdrawn from the bank account. Total Rs 3.92 lakh.

How is mobile access done?

When an unknown APK file is installed in the phone, that app can get access to the phone's screen, camera, calls, messages and even banking apps. Through this, fraudsters can easily read OTP, steal passwords and then transfer money - and you will not even know.

How to avoid such fraud?

1. Download apps only from trusted sources, like Google Play Store or App Store.
2. Never open an APK file sent by an unknown person, even if he claims to be a bank or police officer.

3. Keep the permission to install apps from "Unknown Sources" turned off in the phone.

4. If you have accidentally installed an APK file, immediately put the phone in flight mode and inform the bank.

5. As soon as the fraud happens, call 1930 (Cybercrime Helpline) or report it on [www.cybercrime.gov.in](https://www.cybercrime.gov.in).

An APK file looks like a normal app, but through it, the entire control of the mobile can go into someone else's hands. Therefore, it is wise to stay away from any unknown link or file. Use technology smartly, so that both your money and data remain safe.
