Maxwell to Lead Washington Freedom

Glenn Maxwell has been appointed as the captain of Washington Freedom for the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season. This decision comes after Steve Smith, who led the team to victory in 2024, will have limited participation in the tournament due to his national commitments.

Maxwell, who recently hinted at retiring from One Day Internationals (ODIs), brings a wealth of leadership experience. He has previously captained the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he led the team in 65 matches, achieving 34 wins and 30 losses, with one game resulting in no result. Additionally, he captained the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2017, securing seven wins out of 14 matches but narrowly missing out on a playoff spot.

Announcement from MLC2025

"Captain Maxwell is here to rewrite the script. Glenn Maxwell will lead the Freedom squad in Cognizant Major League Cricket 2025. Steve Smith will captain the side in the two games he plays during the season.

During the 2025 season, Smith is expected to participate in only two matches, as he is committed to the Australian team for a three-match Test series in the Caribbean.
