Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti voiced his disapproval of Yamal’s action during an appearance on The beach bar on June 9.

“I don’t know if it’s the first time I’ve seen someone wearing a cap backwards at a press conference,” he said. “I don’t like it, he’s representing the national team. When he’s in Ibiza or anywhere else, fine. But not at a press conference with Spain.”

Guti, who spent 15 years at Real Madrid and won 15 major titles, including five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies, believes Yamal should maintain a more professional image while on national duty.

This is not the first time the 17-year-old star of Barcelona has been criticized for his appearance and attitude. In March, former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart called Yamal sleazy, lacking effort and wearing his pants low during Spain’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in the Nations League quarterfinal first leg.

Yamal responded in the second leg with a controversial celebration. After scoring, he pulled his shorts slightly down, slowly walked toward the corner flag, then paused and posed with a hand in his face, seemingly mocking Van der Vaart’s comments.

The teenager later shared the moment on Instagram, writing: “Pants down, one goal, missed penalty and into the semi-finals. Go Spain.” He also posted a video of himself lying on a bed with his shorts lowered, further fueling debate.

In April, Yamal drew more criticism after his conduct during Barcelona’s Copa del Rey victory celebrations. During a ceremony attended by King Felipe VI, Yamal wore his jersey backwards, sported two pairs of sunglasses, casually dapped up and hugged the monarch, actions many viewed as disrespectful.

Despite the controversies, Yamal’s performances on the pitch have made him a star. Over the past year, the 17-year-old has scored 24 goals, helping Spain win Euro 2024 and playing a key role in Barcelona’s domestic treble: La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
