Google is set to alert Pixel 6a users about a potential battery overheating hazard. This follows reports of the device catching fire. The latest Android beta reveals that after 400 charge cycles, the phone's battery capacity and charging speed will be limited as a safety measure.

Users receiving this warning are advised to replace the battery or consider upgrading their phone immediately.

In recent weeks, two separate incidents of Pixel 6a devices catching fire have been reported. One occurred in May, and another happened last week. A Reddit user and an Android Authority reader shared alarming photos of their melted phones, highlighting the severity of the issue when a battery overheats critically.

Software Update for Battery Management

A Google spokesperson confirmed that a mandatory software update will be issued for certain Pixel 6a phones to mitigate potential battery overheating risks. This update will activate battery management features that reduce capacity and charging performance once the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. Impacted customers will receive detailed information next month.

The Pixel A-series is known for offering excellent value among Android phones. The Pixel 6a, launched in July 2022, brought Google's Tensor processor to a mid-range price point. However, with Google's warning about potential battery overheating issues, it might be time for users to consider upgrading their devices.

Previous Battery Issues

Smartphones occasionally catch fire or explode due to isolated incidents or fundamental flaws in the device itself. The Pixel 4a experienced similar battery overheating risks, prompting Google to release an update that throttled performance to reduce danger. Australian authorities even recalled the device due to these concerns.

The Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release contains a warning for Pixel 6a users about potential battery overheating issues. Once the battery reaches 375 charge cycles, an alert advises that capacity and charging performance will be reduced at 400 cycles as a precautionary measure.

Recommendations for Users

If you own a Pixel 6a, check for warnings under Settings > Battery > Battery health. If alerted, it's strongly recommended to replace the battery or upgrade your device immediately due to the serious threat posed by battery fires.

Google suggests visiting g.co/pixel/6abattery for support options once performance is throttled. Although this support page isn't live yet, inquiries have been made regarding Google's plans for handling Pixel 6a battery replacements.

The problem with the Pixel 4a was severe enough that Google offered free battery replacements or cash compensation to affected users. Australia's Competition & Consumer Commission warned that "an overheating battery could pose a risk of fire and/or burns to a user." For those holding onto their Pixel 6a, which receives software support until July 2027, it may be prudent to heed Google's warning and consider an upgrade due to these potential safety concerns.
