Ahmedabad– The catastrophic crash of Air India flight AI171 into the BJ Medical College UG hostel mess in Meghani Nagar, Ahmedabad, has left the medical and student community in shock. The incident, which occurred shortly after the flight’s takeoff en route to London, has reportedly caused multiple student injuries, with many feared dead or critically hurt.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) expressed its anguish on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We are deeply shocked… The news is even more horrifying as the crash occurred in BJMC’s hostel mess, injuring many MBBS students.” They added that they are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to offer assistance.
In a later update, FAIMA confirmed that several injured students were rushed to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad for treatment. However, no official confirmation has been released yet regarding fatalities or missing students.
According to Dr. Akshay Dongardhive of FAIMA, 20 to 30 students are reported to be injured. One parent, Ramila, shared her relief, saying her son survived after jumping from the second floor during the impact but sustained injuries.
The State Police Control Room confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Three NDRF teams from Gandhinagar and three more from Vadodara have been deployed for rescue and recovery operations.
Leaders across India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, have expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident a “heartbreaking tragedy” and standing in solidarity with the victims and their families.
