UPI: Often, in a hurry or due to wrong typing, we send money to the wrong UPI ID or number. There are many ways to get the money back. From talking directly to the recipient to filing a complaint with RBI, all the methods are mentioned here, with the help of which you will get your money back.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completely changed the way we Indians make payments. Be it shopping or bank-to-bank transfers, crores of transactions happen daily through UPI apps. However, with the advent of UPI, the process of transaction has become easier, but sometimes mistakes can also happen with just one tap.

Mistakes like sending money to a wrong UPI ID. This mistake is sometimes made by us due to haste or wrong typing. This mistake is so common that it can happen to anyone. If you have also made this mistake somewhere or it happens in the future, then there is no need to panic. To get your money back, you just have to keep a few things in mind. Let us know what steps you should take if you ever get stuck in such a dilemma.

Contact the recipient directly

If possible, first try to talk to the recipient through the phone number associated with the UPI ID. Explain the situation to him properly and politely request him to return the money.

Immediately lodge a complaint on the UPI app

The first few minutes after the transaction is processed are crucial. As soon as you realize the mistake, immediately lodge a complaint through the UPI app through which you made the transaction, whether it is Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM. These platforms have a built-in support section where you can lodge a complaint.

To lodge a complaint, first go to your transaction history, select the wrong transfer and click on the 'Raise a Dispute' or 'Report an Issue' option. After this, provide complete information like wrong UPI ID, transaction ID, amount transferred and date of payment so that your complaint can be resolved quickly.

Contact your bank

Along with the UPI help section, the user should also contact the customer service of his bank. Most banks have a prescribed procedure for complaints related to UPI. Inform the bank representative about the wrong transaction and request to start the reversal process. In some cases, the bank may ask for a written complaint or ask you to come to the branch. After this, the bank officially traces the amount and tries to reverse it.

File a complaint with NPCI

If the options mentioned above do not work, then you can take the matter to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI system. For this, you have to go to the official website of NPCI and fill the online complaint form under 'Dispute Redressal Mechanism'. In this process, you will have to provide proof such as transaction information, your contact details and bank statements.

Contact RBI Ombudsman

If the problem is not resolved even after a month, you can escalate the matter and file a complaint with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Ombudsman for Digital Transactions. This official process can prove to be helpful in getting a solution especially in cases related to transactions of large amounts. You can also use RBI's Complaint Management System portal to lodge a complaint.
