Mumbai braces for a wet weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated weather alerts across the city and surrounding regions, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Weekend weather alertsYellow Alert (June 12–15): Mumbai and Thane remain under a yellow alert through Sunday, June 15, due to the revival of monsoon currents. Isolated heavy to very heavy showers are expected within this period.
Orange Alert (Saturday, June 14): Conditions heighten on Saturday when Mumbai and Thane shift to an orange alert. Residents should anticipate intense rainfall, thunder, lightning, and gusts reaching 40–50 km/h.

Red Alert for Ratnagiri: On the same day, Ratnagiri district faces a red alert with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours, violent storms, blazing lightning, and strong winds.

Heavy rain is expected to begin in the southern Konkan districts—Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad—before advancing northward to Mumbai and Thane. These western coastal areas are currently humid, with Santacruz and Colaba observatories registering around 77–81 % humidity. June has already seen significant rainfall—83.8 mm in Colaba and 87.5 mm in Santacruz—following an early southwest monsoon onset on May 26.
On Friday, scattered light to moderate showers may give way to heavier rain at isolated locations throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Thunderstorms, including lightning and wind gusts up to 50 km/h, are forecasted.
Impact and preparednessResidents should prepare for possible waterlogging, especially in low-lying neighbourhoods, and expect traffic disruptions during peak downpours.
Sudden thunderstorms could pose hazards to outdoor activities—take precautions such as carrying umbrellas and avoiding coastal strolls during high winds.
Fishermen have also been warned to avoid venturing out due to deteriorating sea conditions across the four-day forecast period.
