The beloved series, Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1983, has been under scrutiny by its cast members, who claim that one episode of the historical drama "would not happen today". The show, spanning nine seasons, starred Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert, Karl Swenson, Richard Bull, and Karen Grassle, and centred around the Ingalls family living in Walnut Grove, , during the late 1800s.
Alison Arngrim and Dean Butler, also part of the cast, have teamed up with Pamela Bob for a podcast reminiscing about their time on the show, ahead of a Netflix reboot. In the latest episode of Little House 50, they discussed the season four episode Here Comes the Brides.
This episode, first aired on December 5, 1977, features Adam Simms, played by Joshua Bryant, and his son Luke, portrayed by Bob Marsic, causing a stir among the locals after moving to town. It also sees Adam making advances towards Eva Beadle, played by Charlotte Stewart, and Luke falling for Nellie, portrayed by Alison.
The young couple elope, but their marriage is short-lived and annulled. Later, Eva and Adam also eloped, shocking the townsfolk.
Reflecting on the episode during the podcast, Alison said: "I love this episode so much ... It's just a display of adolescent rebellion, pouting and smoking, massive hormonal love... it really is Romeo and Juliet just gone berserk."
Alison fondly recalled the trials of teenage years on set, chuckling over her character's firsts: "The hormones go wild, it's just crazy. I am 15 in this episode," which she deemed "one of her favourites."
Reflecting on her youth during the scene, Alison continued: "So I was 15, probably in a few months when we shot this.
"It was hilarious. So, it was so perfect. The first time she rebels against her mom, the first time she falls in love."
Despite Alison's own age at the time, she emphasised the discrepancy with her character's age: "I'm sorry, I'm 15, so she's just barely 13. This cat is playing, I guess, 16, 17? He's 27 years old. He was in his late 20s, definitely older than 25."
Upon clarifying the age of fellow actor Bob, Alison quipped with bemusement: "We're children, teenagers... We're not just like, 'Gee, he's cute! Hi, there. We're like, '[Forcefully] Hi, what are you doing later?'"
She added, "They're young girls, these children, accosting a grown man whom they have not been introduced to."
Pamela joined in: "It's straight in for the kill. There is no swag on the prairie. No one's got game on the prairie."
Highlighting the sensitive nature of casting then versus now, Alison pointed out: "That would not happen today, right? Casting a full-grown adult to play or even kiss - and it was an innocent kiss, but it's a kiss - a minor."
Considering current filmmaking practices, Alison noted that intimacy coordinators would ensure a comfortable environment for such scenes today.
This follows as Little House On The Prairie star Jack Lilley died earlier this year at the age of 91. Melissa Gilbert, who portrayed Laura Ingalls Wilder on the show, confirmed the news of her co-star's passing.
On Instagram, Melissa shared the heartbreaking details: "The little house family has lost one of our own. Jack Lilley has passed away. He was 91 years old. He also happened to be one of my favourite people on the planet.
"He taught me how to ride a horse when I was just a wee little thing. He was so patient with me. He never said no when I would bound up to him squealing, 'Can we go ride? Please, please, please?' Aside from being Victor French's photo double, he was featured prominently in many different roles on Little House. You can also see his absolute brilliance in the film Blazing Saddles," she added.
Accompanied by photos of the actor, her lengthy tribute continued to recall another occasion she had worked with him on an early 2000s western pilot.
"In 2002 (ish) I had the great pleasure of acting in a western pilot for ABC, produced by Chris Brancato and Bert Salke, starring my pal, Sean Patrick Flanery, called Then Came Jones. (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, in her very first role, played my daughter). It was a joy to shoot and I was so bummed when it didn't get picked up.
"It was all very synchronistic. Our first read-through was at Paramount Studios, where we had shot Little House the first four years. It was also on Halloween, which is Michael Landon's birthday. That day, I also found out we would be shooting at Big Sky Ranch, where we had shot little house."
"My first day on set was surreal, getting my hair and makeup done, getting dressed, laced into my corset, boots etc. Such a strange deja vu.
"Then I walked to the set itself and before I could even focus I heard a familiar voice holler, 'Hey Halfpint, you old rat-ass!!!' It was Jack. He was our wrangler for that pilot and by his side was Denny Allen, who had been our wrangler on Little House.
"In that instant, I knew I was home. Jack always felt like home to me. He lived quite a life. I am so lucky that he was my friend. All my love and prayers go out to his family."
