The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken a big and relieving decision. Now it has become easier than ever for users of networks like Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vi to switch from prepaid to postpaid and postpaid to prepaid plans. Earlier, where users had to wait for 90 days to do this, now this time limit has been reduced to just 30 days.

What is the new rule?

DoT announced through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle that now mobile consumers can change their number from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa within just 30 days. This process can be completed through OTP-based KYC verification. For this, users will have to go to the authorized outlet of their telecom operator and do identity verification (KYC) through OTP.

Change in the old order.

This new decision has come as an amendment to the order issued on 21 September 2021, in which a waiting period of 90 days was mandatory earlier. Now this change will benefit crores of consumers who will be able to change quickly if they are dissatisfied with the network service.

30-day limit only for the first time
This facility will be applicable only for the first-time switching. If a consumer switches to prepaid or postpaid for the first time with OTP-based KYC, he can do so in 30 days.

There will be a rule of 90 days for repeated switching
If a customer wants to switch again through OTP, he will get this facility only after 90 days of the last switch. DoT has directed telecom companies to inform consumers about this rule every time before starting the switching process.

Switching is possible even before 30 or 90 days, but...
If the consumer wants to switch again before the completion of the 30 or 90-day period, he can do so, but for this, he will have to physically complete the entire KYC process (including document verification) and this can be done only at authorized outlets.
