Shillong, June 15: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed the allocation of ₹951.27 crore for the eagerly awaited Tura Bypass project.
This 29.03-kilometer initiative, designed as a two-lane road with paved shoulders, aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Tura and improve access to the international border with Bangladesh.
On Sunday, Gadkari took to social media to highlight the project's strategic significance, which will connect NH-127B near Sanchonggre village to NH-217 at Jenggitchakgre village in the West Garo Hills district.
NH-217, previously known as NH-51, serves as the main route linking Guwahati to Dalu, an inland customs checkpoint on the India-Bangladesh border.
Gadkari emphasized that the existing NH-217 route runs through Tura's urban center, where narrow roads and heavy traffic have long been problematic. The new bypass is intended to redirect through traffic away from the town, enhancing mobility and safety for local residents.
This bypass is expected to boost logistical efficiency and facilitate cross-border trade while improving road safety by separating long-distance vehicles from local traffic. This development is anticipated to alleviate daily commuting issues and foster regional economic growth.
Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, expressed his appreciation for the announcement, thanking Gadkari and the central government for responding to a longstanding regional demand.
The Tura Bypass is part of the government's broader initiative to enhance road infrastructure in the Northeast.
