Suspense crime, Digital Desk : In a candid and remarkably graceful reflection on her past, veteran screenwriter Honey Irani has opened up about the end of her marriage to celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar and the subsequent role of actress Shabana Azmi in their lives.

Speaking about one of Bollywood’s most discussed relationships, Irani made it clear that Shabana Azmi was not the reason her marriage fell apart. She revealed that her relationship with Akhtar was already broken before Azmi entered the picture. Fights had become frequent, and Akhtar’s heavy drinking had strained their bond to its breaking point.

“Our marriage was already over. Our lovely days were behind us,” Irani stated, emphasizing that the core issues were between herself and her then-husband.

She recounted the painful but necessary decision to ask Akhtar to leave, choosing to raise their children, future filmmakers Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, on her own. Determined not to let them witness the constant acrimony, she put on a brave face, started working, and single-handedly built a stable and loving home.

What followed is a testament to immense maturity from all sides. Honey Irani spoke with deep respect for Shabana Azmi, highlighting that Azmi never tried to turn the children against her and has always been a warm and positive presence in their family. Over the years, the two women have forged a strong and beautiful friendship, creating a healthy and modern blended family.

Honey Irani’s story is not one of a bitter ex-wife, but a powerful narrative of a woman’s resilience, a mother’s fierce love, and the capacity for forgiveness and respect in the face of a painful separation.
