Census exercise in 4 states including Assam and Jammu and Kashmir intensifies, administrative boundaries will be decided 6 months in advance
Big preparations for census: The process of long -standing census in the country is now seen to be gaining momentum. The central government has issued an important notification for four states, under which the process of finalizing administrative boundaries there will be completed 6 months in advance. This step is considered to be an important beginning towards nationwide census.
According to this notification issued by the General Registrar of India and Census Commissioner (RGI) office, four states – Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland – Last date to freeze the boundaries of administrative units 1 January, 2024 Has been fixed. Whereas this time limit for all other states and union territories of the country June 30, 2024 Is.
The first and basic phase of the census is to decide administrative boundaries. There can be no change in the boundaries of any district, tehsil, taluka, police station or village. Once these boundaries “freeze”, census workers start the list of houses and counting of population based on these stable boundaries. This ensures that the figures are accurate and no area is counted twice or no area is missed.
This decision is also important because the process of delimitation has been completed in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir recently, due to which the administrative and electoral boundaries there have already become clear. By starting the process early in these states, the government wants to pursue the census work in a phased manner.
Let us tell you that the census in 2021 was postponed due to Korona epidemic, after which the date of freezing administrative boundaries has been extended several times. Now this new notification indicates that the government is serious to complete the stopped census as soon as possible.
