is renowned for its spectacular , historic towns, and villages, making it a popular spot for summer getaways. However, with these locations becoming more and more popular, many Brits are looking to visit some lesser-known spots.

One of Devon's best-kept secrets is Budleigh Salterton, a charming seaside town just 20 minutes away from the busy tourist destination of Sidmouth. Alex Gwillim, a local expert from Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays, said: "People often miss out on a visit to Budleigh Salterton because it is nestled between more popular destinations like Exmouth and Sidmouth, which draw big crowds on a nice day.

"Budleigh Salterton is a real hidden gem, boasting a beautiful pebble that stretches over two miles, the iconic red sandstone cliffs of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic coast, and a small town filled with unique local businesses."

The seaside spot has a population of just 7,000 people, but its huge beach and lack of crowds make this town stand out from the rest.

One TripAdvisor review of the town read: "Great scenery, friendly community, always clean and great for the family."

Another one added that the seaside spot is "wonderfully unspoilt", whilst a third penned that it's their "go-to" staycation base.

If you're visiting the town and looking for things to do, Alex recommended that "adventure seekers take advantage of Budleigh Salterton's excellent selection of water spots".

This includes renting a standup paddleboard or kayak to enjoy the coastline by sea. For those who are looking for more of a relaxing visit, you can enjoy the beach, bathe in the sea, and enjoy local cafes and tea rooms.

Alex added, "Budleigh Salterton is also the perfect spot for nature lovers. Head along the beach towards the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve, a popular spot for bird watching.

"There are also easy walking trails with fantastic views of the Triassic sandstone cliffs and their fantastic geology."

If you're looking for somewhere to stay to make the trip last longer, there are plenty of accommodation offerings, including cosy cottages, B&Bs, and hotels.

The town isn't too big, meaning everything is easily accessible, and the beach is right on your doorstep.

However, if you're looking to explore nearby areas, it is recommended that you have a car to make the journey.
