JJ Spaun dashed to CVS at 3am as his daughter suffered through a night of illness before his US Open victory on Sunday. In what turned out to be a rain-drenched and disrupted final round at Oakmont, Spaun overcame a dreadful start to clinch his first major title. The 34-year-old spiralled to five-over within the first six holes, teetering on the edge of the contest, but he clawed back into the game after the rain delay.

Earlier defeated by Rory McIlroy in a playoff at The Players, Spaun delivered a sensational tee shot on the 17th for a birdie and seized a one-shot advantage. He ended the tournament with a spectacular putt for birdie on the 18th, securing a two-over 72 and claiming the US Open title by a two-shot lead over Robert MacIntyre.

Amidst the showers and the euphoria, Spaun celebrated with his caddie, his wife Melody and their two daughters in an emotional embrace by the green. Addressing the media later on, he shared that his daughter Violet had been unwell, prompting his early morning race to the pharmacy before his round commenced.

"Today I was running to CVS in downtown because my daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night long," Spaun said. "My wife was up at 3am, and she's like: 'Violet is vomiting all over. She can't keep anything down.'

"It was kind of a rough start to the morning. I'm not blaming that on my start, but it kind of fit the mould of what was going on, the chaos. I don't think I had any, I didn't really, like when I go back home after the round, my kids are there, and it's such a big distraction where I'm not even having to dwell on anything or think too much, which is a good thing.

"The Players was tough. I was alone that week, and I'm just kind of sitting there at night in my hotel room, like trying not to go on social media, trying not to go on Twitter or whatever, X. It's nice to be able to have the kids to be around and be a dad.

"That kind of keeps your mind off golf and kind of gets me in a calm, cool, collective mindset going into today."

After sinking the longest putt of the tournament and clinching victory, Spaun enjoyed a celebration with his loved ones. His children and wife were present for a moving embrace, a moment he treasured particularly on Father's Day.

"It was a very touching moment to see my girls there," he reflected. "They've never - well, my oldest daughter, she was at the Valero when I won, and she was about the same age as my youngest daughter now.

"It was so cool to just have my whole family there on Father's Day. It's just incredible. I have no words to describe the moment and them being able to see me as the winner.

"My daughter always asks me, every time dad goes golfing, she's like, 'Were you the winner today?' Sometimes I'm like, 'Yeah, I was.' She's like, 'Where's my surprise?'

"So today, she's like, 'You're the winner today.' Like she got to see it. She didn't have to ask me. So that was a really fun moment."
