Timothy West's final touching gesture to his beloved wife Prunella Scales has come to light following his death, as the much-loved star allocated a significant portion of his estate to various charities.
West was known for his roles in popular British soaps, such as Coronation Street and EastEnders, as well as his long-term marriage to Fawlty Towers actress Prunella Scales. He died peacefully at the age of 90 in November, surrounded by his family at a care home.
Recent documents have disclosed that West bequeathed £15,000 to The Combined Theatrical Charities Appeals Council, an organisation dedicated to supporting stage charities across the UK. Additionally, he designated £10,000 each to several institutions, including the Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Royal Trust, Southwark Cathedral, the arts charity Snipe Charitable Trust, and the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières UK.
Furthermore, £5,000 from his estate, which totalled £109,892 after deductions from an original sum of £221,425, was allocated to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. He also left £20,000 to his sister, Patricia Anne West, in a will he initially drafted in 2020 while residing in Wandsworth Common, London, as reported by Need To Know.
Scales, known for her role as Sybil, the wife of the rude hotel owner Basil Fawlty in the classic series Fawlty Towers, received a final portion of the estate amounting to £29,892. In March 2024, an amendment to the will was made, declaring that both she and her husband, West, would jointly gift their son Sam £300,000 to assist with the renovation of his home.
Sam, who is 58 years old, is not only an actor but also works as a narrator and theatre director. West has another son, Joseph, with Scales, in addition to a daughter, Juliet, from his previous marriage to actress Jacqueline Boyer.
Previously, the couple's marriage was shared by Scales as being her proudest achievement. Speaking to The Times, she said: "I think I'm a very lucky lady. I'm married to a very interesting person, and I love him very much. I'm also interested in him. So it's not a problem. If I had an unhappy marriage and was married to somebody I didn't get on with, I'd be a different person."
Despite Prunella being diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2014 and keeping her health private, she spoke in an interview explaining her memory is "less good" and she often tends to forget things. "I forget to do things and, that's age, the same as everybody else," she shared.
In October last year, Prunella's son shared that they had enjoyed a cruise, although he was "not sure" if she knew where they were going, but she did enjoy the journey.
