As excitement grows for Superman, the inaugural film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, controversy is already emerging — not from critics, but from a faction of Zack Snyder loyalists. Some fans of the original 'SnyderVerse' have allegedly initiated an online campaign to undermine the film’s release on July 11, leading to a pointed yet measured response from Gunn himself.
James Gunn responds to SnyderVerse fans
On Reddit, one user mobilizing Snyder fans shared a call to 'fight for our SnyderVerse' by disrupting Gunn’s
Superman debut. The post suggested strategies such as posting spoilers, leaving negative reviews, and reserving tickets without actually buying them to impact box office performance.
James Gunn, however, seems undeterred. Addressing the movement on Threads, he stated, "I think we will survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events."
In a subsequent interview with
Rolling Stone, Gunn provided a more in-depth view on the backlash. "I don’t mind it. I think it’s good. I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you... It’s all right to have an opposing force every once in a while," he remarked, noting that one actor from
Superman, whom he did not identify, is emotionally affected by online discussions. "I said, 'First of all, you realize that the trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive. These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.'"

Gunn labels some criticism 'ridiculous'
Discussing extreme instances, Gunn added,
“Some of the things get ridiculous — I just know that every time something comes out, it doesn’t matter how positively received, there’s gonna be something that is of great controversy. It was great controversy that the sun caused Superman pain.”
Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, hits theaters July 11.
