Ex-Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has chosen to bring an end to his extensive cricket career. His final Test appearance is against Bangladesh in the ongoing first Test that is being played in Galle, the venue where he made his debut and earned his 100th Test cap.

 

Angelo Mathews had previously posted on social media that he would be retiring from Test cricket, stating it was time for someone younger to step in and contribute towards Sri Lanka's future.

 

Mathews' Plans for White-Ball Retirement

 

Prior to his last Test, former Sri Lanka skipper Mathews informed journalists that he will also retire from white-ball cricket soon. He wishes to provide the services one last time by respresenting Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka and retire after that. He mentioned that he would put in effort towards his fitness and attempt to be a part of the Sri Lankan side once again.

Cricbuzz quoted Angelo Mathews saying:

 

"There are six more months until the next T20 World Cup, and I'll give it a try depending on what my body tells me. I hope to retire from white-ball cricket at that World Cup."

 

The 38-year-old further added:

 

“If we can win another World Cup, I'll try to contribute toward that. So, I'll do everything I can to improve my fitness and skills over the next six months."

 

Mathews has had a distinguished career in T20 Internationals. He was a member of the Sri Lankan team that won the . He amassed 1,416 runs in 90 T20I matches with six half-centuries. He also has 45 wickets to his name and has conceded runs at an economy rate of 7.14. His most recent T20I game was against the Netherlands during a ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at Gros Islet.
