Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh found himself at the centre of a hip-hop feud after attending a Kendrick Lamar concert in Toronto last week. Images of Singh at the show surfaced online, leading to a direct message from Drake, who publicly expressed his displeasure. Singh later issued an apology on social media, clarifying his reasons for being at the event and stating his loyalty to Drake.

On Sunday night, Drake posted a screenshot of his Instagram direct messages with Jagmeet Singh. The most recent message read, “You’re a goof.” The post included a previous message where Singh had thanked Drake for following him back in 2019, as well as now-deleted Instagram stories that Singh had posted in support of Drake. The message was the only public response Drake gave related to Kendrick Lamar's Toronto concerts.

Later that evening, Singh responded via his own Instagram story. “I went for SZA not Kendrick,” he wrote. “I was born in this city, I love this city. But real talk, I get it. I shouldn’t have gone at all.” Singh acknowledged the impact of Drake and his label OVO in shaping Toronto’s cultural presence and music scene.

In the same Instagram post, Singh stated, “For me it’ll always be Drake over Kendrick.” His remarks came after Kendrick Lamar’s concert in Toronto received a strong response from local fans. Lamar performed his diss track “Not Like Us,” which was met with a two-minute standing ovation and encore requests. Though Drake did not publicly respond to the crowd’s reception of Kendrick, his message to Singh singled out the politician’s presence at the show.

Drake, meanwhile, released a new track with Toronto rapper Smiley during the same weekend. The song reinforced his image as “the 6ix God,” referencing his long-standing connection to the city of Toronto.
