pune bridge collapse : The incident of the collapse of a 32 -year -old bridge over the Indrayani river in Maval tehsil of Pune shook the whole of Maharashtra. A large number of tourists were present on the bridge at the time of the accident and many people were busy taking selfies. This incident is a warning that how careless we can be about public structures.
In a picture revealed just before the accident, the bridge is seen bending from the beach, which clearly indicates that there was an unusual weight on the bridge. According to eyewitnesses, the bridge began to bow down due to the huge crowd, but no one took the danger seriously. Local people had already told the administration about the dilapidated condition of the bridge, but no effective action was taken.
The accident occurred at around 3:30 pm on Sunday afternoon, in which four people died and 18 others were injured. More than 100 people were present on the bridge at the time of the accident. This bridge was especially considered a popular place for tourists and picnic. Officials said a warning board was already installed on the bridge, in which it was advisable not to gather more crowds, but the tourists ignored it.
Pune District Magistrate Jitendra Dudi said, “The bridge was already declared insecure. Despite this, about 100 people were present there, many of which were engaged in taking selfies. A committee will be formed for investigation which will report on the role of local administration and compliance with the security standards.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a grace of ₹ 5 lakh to the families of those killed in the accident. Along with this, the state government will also bear the entire cost of treatment of the injured. The Chief Minister also assured that all possible help would be given to the families of the victims and the cause of the accident would be investigated in depth.
