IRCTC Travel Insurance: If you travel by train and do not have your travel insurance policy, then there is no need to panic. You can also get full coverage from the optional travel insurance facility given during ticket booking of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation). In this, insurance cover of up to Rs 10 lakh is available in case of an accident for a premium of just 45 paise per passenger. This policy is issued by one of the three major insurance companies in the country. Liberty General Insurance, Royal Sundaram General Insurance, and United India Insurance.

According to IRCTC, this insurance facility is provided only at the time of booking CNF (Confirmed Ticket), RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), or PartCNF tickets. Keep in mind that this facility cannot be added to the ticket later. To avail of this benefit, optional insurance has to be selected during ticket booking itself.

According to the new rates applicable from 17 February 2024, the passenger has to pay only 45 paise per passenger for this insurance, which includes all taxes.

Which losses will be covered

According to the terms and benefits of the insurance available on the IRCTC website, under this policy, if a train accident occurs during the journey, then the following benefits can be availed.

Death: Rs 10 lakh

Permanent total disability: Rs 10 lakh

Permanent partial disability: Rs 7.5 lakh

Hospitalization expenses for injury: Rs 2 lakh (This amount will be given in addition to death/disability claim)

Expenses for transferring the body: Rs 10,000

When and how can you make a claim

If something unfortunate happens to you in a train accident, then you or your family can file a claim with the insurance company. For the claim, accident documents, ticket details and other necessary documents have to be submitted.

Why is this insurance necessary

Lakhs of passengers travel by trains in India every day. Railways does not have any insurance scheme of its own, but this optional travel insurance of IRCTC provides a big cover at a low cost. Cover up to Rs 10 lakh for only 45 paise is very beneficial for the passengers. Especially passengers travelling long distances or with their families should definitely take advantage of this facility. In short, this facility of IRCTC provides more security at a lower cost.
