In Delhi, a young man accidentally swallowed a spoon while drinking water. Doctors removed the spoon in 30 minutes by doing endoscopy. According to the doctors of Fortis Hospital, the spoon could have got stuck in the small intestine which could have caused serious danger. The patient was discharged the next day after the operation.

    The 30-year-old man was admitted to the hospital in an emergency situation, where the team of doctors removed the spoon from the stomach of the man through a gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure. This medical procedure took 30 minutes. The patient was discharged from the hospital the very next day. Doctors say that if it gets stuck in the upper part of the small intestine, it can be dangerous.

    Dr Ramesh Garg, Chairman and Senior Director, Department of Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, said that the patient was referred to the emergency department of Fortis Shalimar Bagh after initial evaluation at the multi-super-speciality hospital in north Delhi. When the patient came here, his condition appeared stable. Here, immediate diagnostic imaging was done, including an abdominal X-ray, which revealed that a metal spoon was stuck in the upper part of his intestine.

    The patient underwent an emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy under anesthesia. The surgical team carefully removed the spoon from the patient's stomach with the help of forceps. After this surgery, he was kept under observation for 24 hours. The team of doctors led by Dr. Ramesh Garg performed the gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure in 30 minutes and the patient was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition the very next day. This was a very rare and challenging case.

     

    Swallowing a metal object like a spoon can lead to a lot of complications, especially if it gets stuck in the upper part of the small intestine. Deepak Narang, the hospital's facility director, said that our team performed an emergency upper GI endoscopy with anesthesia and removed the 8 cm long spoon with utmost precision and there was no internal injury in the process.
