Veteran Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has broken his silence on the captaincy of the Test team. Bumrah has said that he had rejected the proposal of Test captaincy by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the IPL. Talking to Sky Sports, Bumrah said that he is managing his charge and he needs to work more wisely to play for a long time.

Bumrah is struggling with the problem of injury

For the past few years, Bumrah has been struggling with the problem of injury and due to injury he had to withdraw from the fifth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Bumrah could not be a part of the Champions Trophy due to injury, which India won under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Bumrah said that the BCCI wanted Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to take command of the Indian team after retiring from the Test.

Bumrah said, ‘During the IPL, before Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired, I spoke to the BCCI. I discussed further work in the five -match Test series. I talked to those people who are taking care of my back problem. We came to the conclusion that I have to be a little more careful. Then I called the BCCI and said that I do not want to appear in the role of captaincy because I will not be able to play all Test matches. Gill was appointed captain. Bumrah said, ‘BCCI was watching me for the role of captaincy, but I had to refuse them because it is not ideal to lead someone else in three Tests, then one else leads the remaining Test matches. So this is not appropriate for the team, because I wanted to give priority to the team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar made Shubman Gill the next Test captain of India while announcing the Indian team for the tour of England. After Rohit’s retirement, there was a lot of discussion on who should lead the team, but Gill left Bumrah behind in this race.
