For longtime Mario map fans, unlocking Mirror Mode has usually been a pretty straightforward task: win all the Grand Prix Cups, and you’re in. But in Mario Kart WorldNintendo has raised the difficulty bar. Unlocking Mirror Mode now involves more than just racing; it’s about exploring, collecting, and completing a range of objectives, both on the track and off it.

So, if you’re trying to figure out why Mirror Mode hasn’t shown up yet, here’s what’s really going on, and what you need to do to unlock it.

Nintendo quietly changed the Mirror Mode formula by integrating it with the game’s new Free Roam and Knockout Tour Rally features. According to a recent newsletter from Nintendo, unlocking the mirrored racing mode will require a mix of traditional racing wins and open-world accomplishments.

Here’s how to unlock Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World:

  • Finish every 150cc Grand Prix Cup
  • Finish every 150cc Knockout Tour Rally
  • Find at least 10 Peach Medallions in Free Roam
  • Find at least 10 Question Mark (?) Panels in Free Roam
  • Complete at least 10 P-Switch Missions in Free Roam
  • Complete the Special Cup again after completing the above

It’s worth noting that the requirements may vary slightly depending on your progression. Some players report needing more than 10 of each collectable item in Free Roam to unlock the mode. So if the new cutscene doesn’t trigger, try collecting a few more medallions, panels, or completing additional P-Switch challenges, just to be safe.

One surprise addition this time around? Mirror Mode also affects Free Roam.

If you want to flip the entire Free Roam world into a mirrored version, there’s a specific trick to it. Head over to Peach Stadium via fast travel. Follow the racetrack until you reach the top of Peach’s Castle, where a green warp pipe sits. Ignore the pipe, continue onto the roof, and drop down to the front of the castle. You’ll spot a stained-glass window of Princess Peach, and drive into it.

That’s your entrance into Mirror Mode for Free Roam. The entire map will flip, creating a surreal, reversed version of everything you know. To turn it off, just drive into the window again or leave Free Roam entirely.

Nintendo is clearly trying to blend traditional Mario map mechanics with a more open-ended adventure experience in Mario Kart World. The process of unlocking Mirror Mode now feels more like a full-fledged quest, and for some players, that may be frustrating. But for others, it adds a new layer of challenge and exploration to a beloved feature.

So if you’ve been wondering where Mirror Mode went, now you know: it’s not gone, it’s just hiding behind a bigger adventure.
