Wimbledon's return means their is likely to be in the headlines again with play at SW19 potentially going on until 11pm should a match run late into the evening.

Since the iconic court had a roof built the lack of natural daylight became irrelevant and matches can now run on. It means the doors at Wimbledon can be open for more than 12 hours given the early starts and the amount of matches that take place across the fortnight.

As is always the case the world's top players will descend on south west London. arrives as the defending champion and eyeing a third straight success - a feat rarely achieved. Jannik Sinner will be among those providing opposition for him.

On the women's side of the draw the likes of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and will be looking to make an impact on the grass having dominated the other Grand Slams. It is Barbora Krejcikova who arrives as the defending champion.

When does play begin at Wimbledon?

The grounds open at 10am but play on the outside courts doesn't start until 11am. Often the bigger names are placed on either Court One, which now also has a roof, or Centre Court. Court One play begins at 1pm with Centre Court beginning proceedings half an hour later.

Play on outside courts is naturally determined by the weather and the daylight. That of course is not as issue on the main two show courts. The day’s Order Of Play is decided by The Championships’ Referee and is usually announced any time between 4pm-8pm on the day before.

Centre Court curfew

The Wimbledon curfew of 11pm has been in place since 2009 when Centre Court’s roof opened. It was introduced by Merton Council in order for the Championships to obtain planning permission for the roof, but it can leave fans rushing back or even leaving early to ensure they can still get home.

The curfew has been broken, but very rarely. Back in 2012 beat Marcos Baghdatis with the clock striking 11:02pm - the Scot was just one game from victory at 11pm. Merton Council’s leader Stephen Alambritis commented at the time: “flexibility and common sense prevailed”.

The curfew, in the eyes of some major players, could be avoided if changes were made to the timings at Wimbledon. Centre Court doesn't begin play until 1.30pm and Novak Djokovic has been among those to call for a change to the schedule.

He said: “The matches could be pushed at least to start at 12pm. I think it would make a difference. Obviously curfew is probably something that is much more difficult to change, I understand, because of the community and the residential area we are in." He added: “Once the time is over 8pm, you know that there’s a high probability you won’t finish your match."
