In a heroic rescue in Pune's Kharadi area, a man was saved from being swept away in the swollen Mula-Mutha river by alert police officers on Thursday. As the water release from the dam increased and the current grew stronger, the man got stranded mid-bridge on his bike towards the road to Keshav Nagar. Kharadi Police, risking their own lives, formed a human chain with ropes and safely pulled him out.

Given the rapidly rising water level and the risk of him being swept away, the police immediately alerted the fire brigade. However, with the increasing water flow and urgency of the situation, the police team decided to act swiftly.

Road completely barricaded now

Sanjay Chavan, Senior Police Inspector at Kharadi Police Station, while speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, “As soon as we received the alert about increased water discharge from the Mula-Mutha river, our team rushed to close the bridge road. During the process, we spotted a man stranded mid-bridge on his bike. Without wasting time, our officers formed a human chain using ropes and safely rescued him. The road has now been completely barricaded to prevent further incidents.”

Demonstrating extraordinary courage, Sub-Inspector Khadekar along with Police Constables Dorge, Syed, Gaikwad, Women Constables Thorat and Malvande, and Constables Salke and Kale formed a human chain using a rope and successfully rescued the man, putting their own lives at risk.

The man has been identified as Nawaz Khurshid Kotwal, 38, a resident of Tukaram Nagar, Chandan Nagar, Pune. His life was saved thanks to the brave and quick response of the police team.

The bridge has now been completely closed to the public with barricades for safety.
