This time more discussion is being held outside the field about the historic Test series played between India and England. The reason is the change in the name of this series. Till now it was known as Pataudi Trophy, but this time the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced to name it Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The opinion of the veterans has been distributed on this decision, and now the captain Kapil Dev, who gave India the first World Cup, has also given his response to it.
Kapil Dev reacted to this name change in an event and said, "It’s a little strange, is it too? But well, everything goes on in cricket. After all, there is no big difference. Cricket is cricket, the same game should be on the field." It is clear from his words that they do not fully agree with this change, and consider it to be tampering with traditional heritage.
The Pataudi Trophy was named in 2007 in honor of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Pataudi was not only one of India’s youngest Test captains, but his father Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi also played cricket for both India and England. The trophy was a symbol of cricket relations and heritage between India and England. Now many cricket lovers and veteran are feeling uncomfortable when the name of Anderson-Tendulkar trophy is changed to the trophy.
Sachin Tendulkar himself, in whose name this trophy has been kept, also spoke to the England Cricket Board on this issue. He requested that Pataudi heritage should not be removed from this series. After this, ECB decided to maintain the Pataudi Medal for Excellence, which will be given to the captain of the winning team.
This series is the beginning of a new era for India. Shubman Gill will enter the field for the first time as a Test captain. This is the first major series after retirement of giants like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin. India has recently lost the Test series against Australia and New Zealand, so it will be interesting to see how this new team performs in England.
So far, 136 Test matches have been played between the two teams, in which England have won 51 and India have won 35 matches, while 50 matches have been drawn. India has won 26 Tests on England soil, while 36 matches have been defeated. There may be controversy in the name of this new trophy, but the real challenge on the field will be in front of this young Indian team, which has to create its own legacy.
