Businessman Sunjay Kapur, former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away at the age of 53 after suffering a heart attack. As per reports, the fatal incident occurred while he was playing a game of polo.

At the time of his passing, Sunjay Kapur was married to entrepreneur and former model Priya Sachdev. The couple had been together for several years following Sunjay’s split from Karisma Kapoor.

Noted columnist and author Suhel Seth confirmed the tragic news on X (formerly Twitter). Expressing deep sorrow, he paid tribute to Sunjay, remembering him fondly in his condolence message.

In a poignant detail, Sunjay Kapur’s final post on X was to the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, which took place earlier on June 12. His comment reflected the shock and grief over the tragic aviation incident.

Timeline of Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s Relationship

Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur got married in September 2003 in a high-profile ceremony. The union brought together Bollywood royalty and business elite. They had two children together—daughter Samaira (born in 2005) and son Kiaan (born in 2010).

The couple faced challenges in their relationship for several years. Reports of incompatibility, alleged infidelity, and family disputes began surfacing publicly around 2010. Karisma moved back to Mumbai with her children, distancing herself from Sunjay, who was based in Delhi.

Legal Proceedings and Final Divorce

In 2014, Sunjay Kapur filed for divorce by mutual consent, but the process soon turned acrimonious. Karisma opposed the petition, alleging cruelty and neglect, and accused Sunjay of failing to fulfill financial obligations. She also filed cases to dowry harassment under Sections 498A and 406 of the IPC.

After prolonged court battles, the two parties agreed to convert the contested divorce into a mutual consent divorce in April 2016. The family court in Mumbai recorded their terms, and the final divorce was granted on June 13, 2016.

Karisma Kapoor received sole custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Sunjay Kapur was granted visitation rights.

As part of the settlement, Karisma was reportedly given access to a trust fund set up for the children’s welfare, with substantial financial backing from the Kapur family.
Sunjay also transferred a property in Mumbai (Khar area) to Karisma’s name, which became her and the children’s primary residence.

Karisma Kapoor chose to focus on her children and career, making selective appearances in films and web series. Sunjay Kapur later married model and entrepreneur Priya Sachdev in 2017. They have a child together.
