Mumbai: A 32-year-old man in Mumbai got his hand reconstructed after it was crushed in a sugarcane squeezer. Although the accident resulted in multiple bone fractures and soft tissue damage, the crushed hand was reconstructed by an aesthetic surgeon.

In a dramatic turn of events, an employee of a multinational company unintentionally had his entire hand trapped in the machine while assisting a sugarcane vendor. He suffered a devastating hand injury after his limb was accidentally pulled into a sugarcane juice machine. The mechanical crush resulted in multiple bone fractures and soft tissue damage, causing intense pain and functional impairment.

Doctors Reconstruct Crushed Hand of 32-Year-Old in Rare Surgery at Wockhardt Hospital

The patient was rushed to the nearby Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central where he not only survived the injury but is now on the road to a functional recovery with hopes of resuming work in the near future.

According to aesthetic surgeon Dr. Shraddha Deshpande, the case was assessed as a limb-threatening emergency. “His hand was severely crushed, with extensive skeletal and tissue injury. Immediate action was critical to save function," the doctor said.

The patient underwent a complex reconstructive surgery, which involved skeletal fixation, tissue preservation, and early grafting. Post-surgery, a specialised dermal matrix dressing Matriderm was used to support soft tissue regeneration and improve healing outcomes. He was also enrolled in early physiotherapy, which the doctor said is a crucial step in restoring mobility and preventing long-term stiffness.

The medical team mentioned that the patient's determination played a key role in his recovery. “Time is everything in hand trauma. The faster we act, the higher the chances of saving form and function. This case highlights how early, specialized care can prevent lifelong disability even in the most severe of injuries,” said Dr. Deshpande.
