NIOS Board: National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is a board recognized by the Government of India. Students who cannot go to regular school have the option of studying under NIOS. NIOS provides 10th, 12th, D.El.Ed and professional courses through distance learning. Studying through NIOS is best for rural, economically weaker, or students who have failed board exams.

NIOS's flexible system, free study material, and on-demand examination (ODE) make it different from other boards. NIOS's Credit Transfer System (TOC) allows for completing studies by using the marks of subjects passed from other boards. NIOS makes education easy through self-study, personal contact program (PCP) and tutor-marked assignment (TMA). Its certificate is valid for admission to UPSC, NEET and university.

How is a study done in NIOS?

NIOS is based on a distance learning model. In this, students get the facility to study at home. Its specialty can be understood below:

Flexible Course:

NIOS offers 10th (secondary) and 12th (senior secondary) as well as D.El.Ed, professional courses, and other certificate courses.

The syllabus is similar to CBSE, but the exam is easier than that.

Students can choose subjects according to their interest (minimum 5, maximum 7).

Self Study Material:
NIOS provides free study material (PDF, audio, video) on its website nios.ac.in.

Online content is available on the Swayam platform and NIOS app.

Guide books and previous years' question papers are also available in the market.

Personal Contact Program (PCP):
NIOS organizes optional classes at study centers. Here experienced teachers give guidance. These classes are not mandatory like regular school, but help can be taken from them.

Assignment (TMA):
It is mandatory to submit Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) for each subject.
TMA adds 20% marks to the final result and helps in exam preparation.
NIOS Exam Process:
Exams are conducted twice a year (April-May and October-November).
On-Demand Exam (ODE) option is also available, allowing students to take the exam at their convenience.

NIOS allots exam centres.
Benefits of studying in NIOS
Flexible timings and locations, especially for working or school dropouts.
Recognition for government and private jobs, competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, IIT.
Low fees compared to regular schooling (around Rs 1500-2000 per year, Rs 250 exam fee per subject).

TOC: What is Credit Transfer System?

NIOS's Transfer of Credit system is for those students who want to transfer from other boards to NIOS. It is very useful for students who have failed or dropped out of studies.

What is TOC:

Under TOC, students can transfer the marks of two subjects (10th or 12th) passed in CBSE, ICSE or other recognized boards to NIOS. This allows the student to appear for the examination of only the remaining subjects.

Eligibility:

Passing at least one or two subjects in 10th/12th from CBSE, ICSE or State Board.

Students who have completely failed cannot avail TOC.

The transfer is valid for results obtained within the last five years.

Procedure:

Application: Apply online on the official website of NIOS https://www.nios.ac.in/ and demand for TOC.

Documents: Submit the original board mark sheet, migration certificate and other required documents.

Fees: There may be an additional fee for TOC (around Rs 150 per subject).
Approval: Credits are transferred after verification by NIOS.
