After a stunning 2024/25 campaign, Nick Woltemade is now proving the star of the show in the UEFA U21 Euros this summer. Nobody can currently match the VfB Stuttgart and Germany striker for goals in Slovakia.
If there was any doubt about how clinical the attacking talent can be, a superb hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Slovenia in Germany U21’s opening tie of the European Championships in Slovakia last week was a stark reminder of his ferocious finishing.
A calm outside-of-his-boot strike for the second goal was the pick of that bunch. The 23-year-old then added another goal with a powerful header – and provided two assists – as Germany beat Czechia 4-2 to go top of the tournament’s Group B.
The Stuttgart attacker is the tournament’s top goalscorer after the opening two matchdays with four goals, one ahead of Denmark’s William Osula.
England U21’s defenders will be the next with the unenviable task of trying to stop the attacking whirlwind when they face Germany on Wednesday 18 June (9pm CEST).
Such stunning form merely continues a late-season surge that saw Woltemade take his Bundesliga scoring tally up to 12 for the 2024/25 season with strikes in each of the final three matchdays. He then scored the opening goal as Stuttgart defeated Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the DFB Cup final to finish as top scorer of the competition.
As if that were not enough, the strike talent topped a remarkable spring by making his first appearances for the senior Germany national team under Julian Nagelsmann in UEFA Nations League encounters against Portugal and France in June.
Coach Antonio di Salvo has said of Woltemade’s 11 goals in 15 caps for the U21s: “The streak with us is scary, but it can go on like this.” However far the side progress in the tournament, the striker certainly looks set to keep on scoring – with champions Bayern Munich to be in his sights later this summer in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on 16 August.
