In June 2025, a 30-year-old man came to a multi-specialty hospital in Delhi complaining of severe stomach pain and indigestion. He said that while taking medicine, he swallowed a steel spoon with water. This spoon got stuck in his upper intestine, causing him trouble. During examination, the doctors saw that the 8 cm spoon was stuck in the upper intestine of the patient. This was a very dangerous condition, because the metal object could cause a hole (perforation) in the intestine or a serious infection.

The patient said that he was taking medicine and in a hurry he put the spoon in his mouth along with the glass of water. This kind of carelessness is not normal, but its consequences can be very dangerous. Actually, many people make such mistakes in a hurry. 

How was the spoon removed?

Doctors at Fortis Hospital performed an emergency upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy after giving the patient anesthesia. A thin flexible tube called an endoscope was used in this procedure. This tube has a camera and light attached to it, which helps doctors to see the internal organs. The surgical team carefully removed the spoon from the intestine with the help of forceps (special medical instrument). There was no damage to the patient's intestine during the removal of the spoon. The spoon was removed from the stomach in just 30 minutes. 

Such cases have come to the fore before

This is not the first time such an unusual incident has come to light. During 2022, 62 steel spoons were removed from the stomach of a man in Muzaffarnagar. He lived in a de-addiction centre and had swallowed all the spoons in a year. In this case, the spoons were removed after a two-hour surgery. At the same time, during 2023, a steel glass was removed from the stomach of a young man in Muzaffarpur. He suffered from stomach pain for 20 days. Extreme caution is required in such cases, as metal objects can cause serious damage to the digestive system.
