Green algae are microscopic organisms which thrive in damp and shady conditions and often appear on fences. They can make the fence look unattractive and dirty, whilst also weakening the fence's structure.
This means removing it is very important, but it can be a tedious job. Luckily, East Coast Fencing has shared exactly how to remove algae without using any chemicals. They recommended using a solution of white vinegar and water, which is a "natural" solution, but super "effective".
The experts said: "To remove algae from fence panels, start by wearing protective gloves and eyewear to shield yourself from any debris or cleaning agents."
Start by gently loosening the algae with a soft brush or broom, and then make your vinegar solution.
It's important to avoid using a hard-bristled brush as this could damage the wood's surface.
Add one part white vinegar to two parts water into a bucket or bottle, and then apply this to the affected areas.
Leave this to work for 15 minutes, and you shouldn't have to scrub again unless the algae is super stubborn.
Finally, rinse the panels thoroughly with a garden hose to unveil clean, algae-free fence panels.
The acidity in white vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant that kills the algae without causing harm to surrounding plants or soil.
What's more, vinegar can also be used to treat weeds in the garden as well as clean patios and garden furniture.
It can be picked up from most supermarkets, including Tesco, for around 30p.
Just remember to dilute the liquid with water; otherwise, it could cause more harm than good.
After they're fully dry, it's important to reapply protective treatments to the panels after cleaning to prevent regrowth.
