In a statistical oddity that stunned even seasoned followers of the game, India etched an unwanted record on Day 2 of the Headingley Test against England. Despite three Indian batters scoring centuries — a rare feat in itself — the team was dismissed for just 471. This is now the lowest team total in Test history where three players reached triple figures in a single innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159), Shubman Gill (147 off 227), and Rishabh Pant (134 off 178) all looked untroubled during their respective stays at the crease. Together, they accounted for 382 runs. But the remaining eight batters managed only 89 between them.

Until now, South Africa’s 475 against England in 2016 at Centurion held the record for the lowest total with three centurions. India’s 471 has now undercut that mark, drawing sharp attention to the brittle nature of the lower-middle order.

Collapse After Heroics: Seven Wickets Lost for 41 Runs

India’s slide began immediately after Rishabh Pant's dismissal. From a formidable 430/3, the team collapsed to 471 all out — losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. England’s pace duo of Ben Stokes (4/66) and Josh Tongue (4/86) exploited the second new ball superbly, breaching India's tail with little resistance.

The innings, which once promised a total beyond 550, fizzled out dramatically, leaving a historic blemish instead of dominance.

England, in response, looked composed. At stumps on Day 2, the hosts reached 209/3 in 49 overs. Ollie Pope stood unbeaten on 100 (131 balls), anchoring the innings with fluency. Ben Duckett added 62 before falling to Jasprit Bumrah, who remained India’s lone wicket-taker with figures of 3/48. Zak Crawley (4) and Joe Root (28) were Bumrah's other scalps.

India 1st Innings: 471 all out

England 1st Innings: 209/3 at close (Pope 100, Duckett 62; Bumrah 3/48)*
