In a surprising turn of events during the second day of the Headingley Test against England, India achieved an unwanted milestone that left even the most experienced cricket fans astonished. The team, despite having three players score centuries—a rare occurrence—was bowled out for a mere 471 runs. This total marks the lowest in Test history for a team with three centurions in a single innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 runs off 159 balls), Shubman Gill (147 runs off 227 balls), and Rishabh Pant (134 runs off 178 balls) all appeared to be in control during their innings. Collectively, they contributed 382 runs, while the remaining eight batsmen could only muster 89 runs.
Previously, the record for the lowest total with three players scoring centuries was held by South Africa, who managed 475 against England in 2016 at Centurion. India's 471 has now surpassed that figure, highlighting the fragility of their lower-middle order.
India's downfall began right after Rishabh Pant was dismissed. From a strong position of 430 for 3, the team crumbled to 471 all out, losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. England's pace bowlers, Ben Stokes (4 wickets for 66 runs) and Josh Tongue (4 wickets for 86 runs), took full advantage of the second new ball, dismantling India's tail with ease.
What initially seemed like a promising innings that could exceed 550 runs ended in a historic disappointment.
In response, England appeared steady. By the end of Day 2, they had reached 209 for 3 in 49 overs, with Ollie Pope remaining not out on 100 runs from 131 balls, effectively anchoring the innings. Ben Duckett contributed 62 runs before being dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, who was India's standout bowler with figures of 3 for 48. Bumrah also took the wickets of Zak Crawley (4) and Joe Root (28).
