British comedy lost one of its most beloved stars when Reg Varney died on November 16, 2008 at the age of 92 after suffering from a chest infection and short illness. The star was best known for playing Stan Butler in the classic ITV sitcom On the Buses from 1969-1973, reprising the role for its three spin-off feature films. He died in the Pinewood Nursing Home in the seaside town of Budleigh Salterton in Devon. At the time his daughter Jeanne Marley, who confirmed the news, said he had only recently been admitted to the care home once his chest infection kicked in. The Essex native had adopted Devon as his home in the late 1980s and ended his days with the best of care in a scenic location.
The home is located within a stunning conservation area. It is set high up on the cliffs in a tranquil setting giving it magnificent views across the bay. With a maximum of 35 residents at any one time, it has a community feel. According to Carehome.co.uk the cost of taking up residence is anything from £700-£1,400 weekly for those who are self-funding their care. However it is advised to contact them as costs can depend on individual needs. They do also accept Local Authority and NHS funding which would be taken into account when calculating fees.
Since Reg wasn't in the home long it is unlikely he redecorated his assigned room. However they do actively encourage residents to bring their own furniture and possessions to enable them to feel more relaxed and at home.
While there he could have newspapers delivered and telephones and televisions are provided in rooms so that residents can keep up to speed with what is happening in the world. The location is also close to public transport and local shops for those who like to venture out.
There are also plenty of activities for residents to enjoy which take place in the communal areas - the lounge, dining room and day room. Visits from family and friend are encouraged and unlike some other facilities there is no restriction on visiting times.
Residents have plenty of entertainment to enjoy. Visiting performers and guests such as the local falconry regularly put in appearances and bingo is one of their most popular activities. There is a Wii gaming console available to enjoy. Other activities include music, exercise, crafts, singing and Tai Chi.
The home organises weekly minibus outings for residents to explore the stunning surrounding conservation area. If someone wants to spruce up before an event or outing there is an on site hairdresser.
The food is also top notch with a five week rotating menu in order to avoid repetition and any dietary requirements can be catered for by the home's chefs.
Although there are set meal times where residents to meet up and socialise in the communal dining room they can opt to eat their meals in their rooms. And if the set times don't suit, meals can be taken any time of the day with snacks and beverages available all day and a regular supply of fresh fruit supplied to all residents. Friends and relatives are also encouraged to eat at the home with the residents.
Most importantly the home can cater for all care needs stating that "a care plan is created within 12 hours of a resident's admission to the home". These plans are updated on a monthly basis.
