Zingy and refreshing, salad cream is often used as a salad dressing, in sandwiches or even as a dip. It's pale in colour, similar to mayonnaise, but made mainly with vinegar, which helps with the flavour.

Heinz invented the first commercially produced salad cream in 1914 for the UK market, and it took eight years to develop the recipe. Since that day, supermarkets have released their versions of the iconic condiment. I recently tested salad creams from Asda, Aldi, Lidl, M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's to see how they compared to Heinz.

Asda was first on the blind taste test, and we thought this had a great consistency, although it was slightly too mild in flavour.

However, it went down well and worked well on bread as well as with salad items like cucumber.

Score: 7/10

Aldi's version of salad cream was really creamy, but tasted more like mayonnaise than salad cream.

It was slightly disappointing compared to the others in the taste test, but it wasn't unpleasant to eat.

Score: 5/10

Next up was Lidl's salad cream, which had a very distinctive mustard flavour, which was picked up by three of the taste testers.

It was also noted that the condiment was too tangy compared to other varieties and wasn't that pleasant to eat.

Score: 3/10

Marks and Spencer's salad cream had a very distinctive salad cream flavour, and despite having a good tang, it still wasn't as good as Heinz.

This condiment worked well in a sandwich; however, when there were other components to complement the cream.

Score: 6/10

Waitrose scored very low on the taste test, with it having a slightly weird texture, which was mousse-like and too thick.

It also has a mustard flavouring and didn't work well as a dip or on bread, which was very disappointing.

Score: 2/10

Morrisons' salad cream was not tangy enough and didn't have enough flavour for us, but it wasn't unpleasant.

However, it definitely compared more to mayonnaise than any other salad cream we tried.

Similarly, Tesco's salad cream also resembled mayonnaise and was too creamy in consistency for us.

It equally didn't have enough zing in the flavour, which was a let down, but it paired nicely with cheese and crusty bread.

Score: 5/10

Whilst we liked the flavour of Heinz, it wasn't anything special and had slightly too much zing.

It had a good texture but was slightly too runny, which meant it ran out of the bottle without squeezing it.

Score: 7/10

The salad cream from Sainsbury's smelled delicious and tasted delicious too.

It was flavoursome without being too tangy and had a great consistency. This salad cream won our taste test, and for the price, it definitely beat Heinz.
