Players of India and England wore black bands on the third day of the first Test match on Sunday in honor of former fast bowler David Lawrence. Lawrence died on Sunday at the age of 61. He played five Tests (18 wickets) and one ODI (four wickets) for England between 1988 and 1992.

Lawrence was the first black cricketer of British origin for England.

Lawrence, famous by the nickname Sid, was the first black cricketer of British origin to play for England. He has been battling motor neuron disease (MND) since last year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement, 'Players of both the teams are playing wearing black bands to pay tribute to former England cricketer David 'Sid' Lawrence. Lawrence died on Sunday.'

Lawrence's career

Lawrence was battling a long illness. Gloucestershire veteran Lawrence took 515 wickets in 185 first-class matches and 155 wickets in 113 List A matches. Fast bowler Lawrence was injured while bowling against New Zealand in Wellington in 1992 after which he could not play international cricket.
